The Science on Blueberries

Blueberries have been proven time and time again to be one of the most powerful berries on the planet. Known to have one of the HIGHEST antioxidant levels in common plant foods, many studies have been done to prove their efficacy, as well as the potency of their most prized antioxidants, flavonoids and anthocyanins.

Why Antioxidants?

DNA damage occurs everyday in our bodies and over time this can play a role in aging and the occurrence of cancers and other illnesses. However, antioxidants can help to neutralize some of the free radicals that are causing this damage! That is why antioxidants are so powerful for anti-aging, cancer protection and more.

In a study of 168 people, each drank 1 liter of a mix of blueberry and apple juice daily. After 1 month, oxidative DNA damage due to free radicals was reduced by 20 percent!

Brain Health

This oxidative stress can also accelerate the aging of the brain, leading to cognitive issues. This is why organic blueberries are the leading ingredient in our Brain Berry Boost formula, designed to assist in enhancing memory, mental clarity and acuity!

In fact, in animal studies it has been shown that these antioxidants in blueberries can possibly affect the areas of your brain that are crucial for intelligence. They do this by possibly supporting aging neurons, leading to an improvement in the inner-cell signaling.

Insulin Resistance

Blueberries are also said to be very helpful in diabetics or those with metabolic syndrome, these are currently two of the world’s largest health problems at this point in time. In a study done on 32 obese people with insulin resistance, they were given two blueberry smoothies daily, which were reported to cause major improvements in their insulin sensitivity!

Blueberries are wonderful for so many aspects of your health. We hope you enjoyed this information! Please feel free to leave us a comment or a review, we’d love to hear from you!

The Truth About Stevia

Stevia has received some harsh press over the last few years and this is rightfully so. The rise in refined Stevia products, mostly anything that is white and powdery, has caused many to question the safety of Stevia. However, it may not be the Stevia Plant that is the problem, but the way in which they process it…

In the production of white powdered Stevia, the plant is harshly stripped and refined and chemicals such as Hexane, Chloroform and Aqueous Ethanol are used. Leaving harsh residue that has the potential to get lodged in the vital organs of the body, which can lead to health issues.

BUT WAIT!

So YES, these refined, brand name products are incredibly questionable to your health BUT are you aware of all of the benefits of natural, raw Green Stevia Leaf?!

The plant itself has been used for centuries in its native land of South America as a therapeutic aid for hypoglycemia in diabetics. It also has the ability to help many other ailments and can be a very useful, alkaline, plant sweetener for your kitchen! Here are some of the benefits of Green Leaf Stevia:

1. Can help Regulate Blood Sugar

2. High in Antioxidants

3. Beneficial for Fighting Cavities and Gingivitis

4. Alkaline Forming

5. Can be very Helpful in Weight Loss

6. May help Kill Lyme Disease according to New Haven University

7. High in Vitamins and Minerals

8. May help Lower Blood Pressure

9. May help Kill Pathogens in the Body

10. May be helpful in the Prevention of Cancer

We use Green Stevia Leaf lightly in our Simply Young products, not just to offer sweetness, but for the other health benefits it provides!

Let’s Elaborate on the benefits again…

The Green Stevia Leaf is a zero calorie herb that is one hundred times sweeter than sugar! It is also the only natural and unnatural sweetener that is “alkaline forming” in the body and it will not spike blood sugar levels.

Green Stevia Leaf also inhibits the growth of oral bacteria, so much so, that you could even brew it as a tea and use it as a mouthwash!

The last, and probably most intriguing potential benefit of Stevia

is in the information below…

Fascinating information surfaced after a study done at New Haven University found that alcohol extracted stevia may be one of the most powerful fighters against B. burgdorferi, the pathogen responsible for Lyme Disease. It drastically outperformed the leading drugs used to treat Lyme (doxycycline, cefoperazone, daptomycin, and their combinations).

In unfavorable environments, the pathogen produces a biofilm around itself and then goes dormant. This can often be due to the presence of antibiotics or improper pH or temperature for survival. In the antibiotic groups,  a week after treatment, viable B. burgdorferi started to surface again. This did not happen in the stevia group, however, which appeared to be a complete kill off after seven days.

According to the University, they say we are not at a stage where we can prescribe whole leaf, liquid stevia extract to treat Lyme Disease and more tests need to be done.
That’s not to say you have to avoid it in your diet as there are many other health benefits!

So as you can see, when the right source is chosen you can still utilize and receive the benefits of the natural stevia plant. Don’t be fooled or fall for the marketing gimmicks and convenience of synthetic stevia products out there! We hope this will help you make more informed decisions about your health and that of your families in the future. Stay healthy!

What Do You Know About Charcoal?

Health fad? Or actually really good for you?

Activated charcoal is a fine black powder that comes from wood and coconut husk and it has the ability to bind to everything it comes in contact with within your system (*Please note that this is NOT the same charcoal that you use at your weekend barbecues!) It is actually a medicinal substance that undergoes a processing that strips the charcoal of its toxins and allows it to absorb and remove toxins within the body when consumed. It has actually even been used in hospitals to treat patients admitted due to overdoses as it helps to remove the toxins from their bodies.

It has many potential benefits which range from internal to cosmetic and we are gonna list some of those benefits below…

  1. Intestinal gas: Though the reasons for this are still unknown, activated charcoal has been linked to reducing intestinal gas within those plagued with the discomfort.
  2. Diarrhea: researches have determined that activated charcoal could help with diarrhea due to the porous surface of charcoal being able to absorb the bacteria that causes diarrhea.
  3. Teeth whitening: Activated charcoal has been known to whiten teeth and can be found in many different teeth whitening products. It can also be helpful in overall oral health, as it may be; antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal and overall detoxifying!
  4. Body odor: Activated charcoal can be found in many deodorants as it has been touted to have the ability to absorb excess moisture and control humidity levels at a microscopic level.
  5. Skin: This substance can be beneficial for overall skin health or in helping in healing minor wounds due to its antibacterial effect in absorbing harmful bacterium. On a more day to day level, activated charcoal may be able to remove dirt and toxins from the skin allowing for a deep detoxification.

-Coconut Vegan Whipped Cream-

Nothing says ‘holidays’ more than whipped cream accompanying a delicious and fragrantly spicy, baked dessert. But who wants to sacrifice the healthy eating trend they’ve had going on since summer? With some of us taking on our New Years resolutions early, it is nice to know that we have fun, healthy (and vegan 😉  options for our holiday feastings.

With just a few tricks, it is delightfully simple to make homemade Coconut Vegan Whipped Cream.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can full-fat coconut milk, chilled for 24 hours*
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons organic maple syrup to taste
  • 1 vanilla bean, scraped or 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Chill the can of coconut milk in the fridge for at least 24 hours. Some cans can be “duds”, so it is always nice to keep an extra can in the fridge just in case.
  2. Chill your mixing bowl in the freezer for at least an hour before mixing
  3. After chilling the can, turn it upside down and open from the bottom. The water and cream will separate and you can pour the water into a container to save for later. *Vegan smoothies or coconut ice cubes are a good use for the extra water!
  4. Scoop the solid white vegan coconut cream into the bowl.
  5. Using an electric hand mixer, beat the cream until fluffy and smooth. Add in maple syrup to taste and vanilla.
  6. Place vegan coconut whipped cream in fridge until ready to use. It will firm when chilled and soften at room temperature. This will keep in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 1 week or you can freeze for up to 1 month. After chilling in the fridge, allow it to sit at room temperature until it softens slightly and then you can re-whip it as needed. Enjoy!

Turmeric: Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and has been known to fight certain cancers. It has traditionally been used to alleviate indigestion by stimulating the production of bile from the gallbladder.

Lemon: Acts as a blood purifier and a cleansing agent. It aids in digestion and it has been said that drinking luke warm water and lemon can assist in weight loss.

Ginger: Is known for stimulating good digestion, the basis of health! It also ignites the digestive “fire” by helping the body to release the proper enzymes to break down food so nutrients can be easily absorbed.

Glucomannan: Glucomannan is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system. Glucomannan is taken from the Konnyaku root and is from the same family as the yam, which is 100 percent natural dietary fiber without calories.

Fennel: Is highly beneficial in relieving digestive problems such as indigestion, bloating, flatulence, constipation, colic, intestinal gas, heartburn, and even irritable bowel. HOW Do YOU Get Hydrogen Water?!

Over time, the best and most affordable and eco-sustainable way to obtain the benefits of hydrogen and hydrogen rich water, is to have a water purification and infusion system installed into your home. You can buy canisters of hydrogen infused water or get magnesium tablet which produce hydrogen water, but over time those can become costly and are still contributing to the unfortunate plastic waste epidemic of the planet.

Simply Young’s HydraH2 Water System is a state of the art system that not ONLY infuses with Hydrogen, but also Purifies, Remineralizes, Alkalinizes and Ionizes your water, right in the comfort of your own home. It removes any toxins from your tap, such as fluoride, chlorine, led etc. It then REPLACES the vital minerals needed to sustain life in the proper amounts that would be found in a natural, free flowing spring. The system then Alkalinizes and Ionizes, turning the molecular structure of the water into smaller clusters, so that hydration can more efficiently reach your cells. Last but not least, the final stage is the infusion of EXTRA free Hydrogen molecules, that selectively enter the deepest part of your cells to induce toxin elimination.

Protein, Protein, Protein! 5 Reasons…

  1. Healthy Weight: Satiation is satisfied eating protein. A protein rich meal will keep you feeling light, vital and happy, and ready to take on your day. Gastric emptying is slowed when protein is in the system, leaving you fuller for longer. Also, protein, especially plant protein, helps to build lean muscle mass, particularly is you engage in exercise, which boosts your metabolism, keeping you in a fat burning state all day long.
  2. Supports Neurotransmitters: Mental function is everything, and to have proper communication between the brain and the nerve cells is imperative for a thriving life experience. However, most people simply tolerate their existence and live lower standards of happiness. Though, with sight dietary shifts, your cognitive function and happiness can be optimized. Neurotransmitters are responsible for regulating your sleep, mood, weight and stress response, which is largely dependent upon the amount of amino acids (protein) you consume. Neurological side effects of not eating enough protein can result in depression, anxiety, depression and other disorders.
  3. Stabilizes Blood Sugar: Since protein slows gastric emptying, it keeps insulin and blood sugar from spiking. Of course this is important for prediabetics and diabetics, but why is that good for everyone? Everyone can benefit for the mood balancing that comes from balanced blood sugar and proper meal combining. Having small amounts of carbohydrates, with adequate protein and a good serving of healthy fats, such as seeds, avocados, coconut and nuts can make all the difference in your ability to focus and produce those “feel good” hormones we’re all looking for!
  4. Builds Muscle Mass and Metabolism: Protein is the king of creating lean muscle mass, especially when in partnership with a moderate amount of exercise. Having increased muscle mass also boosts your metabolism Big Time! Allowing you to burn more calories while at rest.
  5. Build Bone Health: Since protein builds muscle, it is of great advantage to have a proper amount of muscle mass to protect your skeleton from fractures or bone breaks. But what’s the best way to actually BUILD bone? PLANTS! Green, leafy vegetables and nuts and legumes such as chia seeds and garbanzo beans are excellent sources of calcium and plant based amino acids and proteins!

What Are My BEST Sources of Protein?

As we know, people are embracing all sorts of diets now a days. From full fledged vegan, to paleo, to high fat, to blood type diets, to pescetarian. Lastly, on the diabetes train and leading onto our next topic, this herb can remove sugar deposits from the kidneys. An issue that commonly accrues in diabetics.
  5. Urinary Tract: This herb assists the kidneys in eliminating excess water, salt, sugar and waste through urine. All the while, replacing some lost potassium stores in the process. Such a powerful diuretic, that in France, the nickname for dandelion is pissenlit literally meaning, “to wet the bed.” Also, due to its antimicrobial properties, it helps to prevent any bacterial, viral or yeast growth within the kidneys.
  6. Anemia: Naturally high in iron and other components to build the blood, such as vitamin b and protein. Dandelions can be recommended in treated anemia.
  7. High Blood Pressure: Frequent urination can be very effective in lowering blood pressure. Since dandelion, particularly dandelion juice, is high in potassium it helps to balance out excess sodium levels as well.
  8. Acne & Other Skin Conditions: The sap or milk of the dandelion weed has been shown to be excellent for helping to treat common skin conditions such as acne, eczema, ringworm or any other skin condition caused by bacterium or a virus due to its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. And as for acne, fresh dandelion juice is an excellent detoxifier, diuretic, stimulant and antioxidant, all very powerful in healing the skin.

Where can you find dandelion?

Dandelion is one of the first ingredients in Simply Young’s Brain Chai Latte. This drink was specially formulated to promote circulation to the brain, though is also has ingredients that benefit the liver, digestion and the lowering of inflammation, as well as everything listed above. Roasted dandelion can be difficult to find in powdered form, though is usually available in most tea sections of any health food store where you will also be able to find Dandelion Extract in the herb/vitamin/supplement section. As for fresh dandelions, they are great roasted or used in veggie stir fries. Or you can get them freshly juiced at an organic juice bar. Even if you need to buy the fresh organic dandelion from the produce section, they are usually happy to juice it for you in any juice , even for a minor fee. We promise, the inconvenience is much worth the reward.

A gentle word of caution…

Though dandelion can be helpful for all these conditions, as far as diabetics are concerned, please consult with your doctor before consuming on a regular basis, as if you are already taking blood sugar modulators, the combination could lead to hypoglycemia.
